Until the Silver Fades

I was sixteen in the mid 1970s when I made this photograph using high-contrast ortho film. I was always experimenting, searching for expression beyond traditional boundaries of the medium.

Description

Until the Silver Fades

Customers often ask, “how long will a black and white photograph last?” A good question, though not so easy to answer. Longevity of a gelatin silver photograph depends on many factors, including: quality and type of photographic paper; chemistry, processing, and washing techniques; storage and handling; mounting, matting and framing; display factors such as lighting, atmospheric, and environmental conditions (just to name a few).

In summary, gelatin silver photographs that are properly processed, stored, handled and displayed will survive for many decades, even centuries—until the silver fades.
